The Water Wizards: Discover Bogota's Majestic Páramos!

The food journey water, wonders: páramos

Did you know that Colombia has one of the most unusual and unique ecosystems in the world?

Why Are Páramos (Moors) So Important?

These unique natural wonders are not only a sight to behold, they play a crucial role in the environment and local communities. Páramos are vital water sources and their remarkable biodiversity dotted with unique flora and fauna makes them one of the most beautiful and valuable ecosystems on the planet.

Colombia is home to 52% of the world's Páramos, including the 5 biggest in the world, covering over 7,167,000 acres of breathtaking landscapes that rise between 5,000 and 17,000 ft above sea level. Two of these Páramos are very close to Bogotá, creating an extraordinary landscape along with the savannas and mountains typical of this capital where our Fruit Chips are carefully transformed and packaged!

Páramo de Sumapaz: The World’s Largest

Located just 43 miles from Bogotá, this Páramo spans an impressive 824,000 acres approximately (equivalent to 624,000 football fields!). Here, you'll encounter exotic wildlife like spectacled bears, agoutis, condors, golden eagles, white-tailed deers, páramo tapirs, ocelots, and much more. With altitudes ranging from 5,200 to 13,000 ft above sea level, temperatures can vary dramatically between 35 °F and 70 °F.

Páramo de Chingaza: A Gem of Nature

The closest one to Bogotá, only 26 miles away, Chingaza National Natural Park is a true gem, home to around 40 glacial lakes. The mystical Siecha lagoons hold cultural significance for the Muisca and Guayupe indigenous peoples, shrouded in legends of hidden treasures. This park, covering 190,000 acres approximately, features diverse temperatures ranging from 28 °F to 70 °F.

Frailejones: A Nature Beauty!

A biodiversity wonder. In Colombia, there is evidence of 98 different species of frailejones (like espeletias), 74% of which are endemic, and it’s estimated that there might be more. Frailejones are living towers of water, their stems and fleshy leaves act as sponges that accumulate water and then release it into the ecosystem. Their metabolism contributes to water regulation, as they respond quickly to climatic variations.

Other Wonders of Bogotá: La Candelaria

While exploring Bogotá, don’t miss the historic heart of the city! This neighborhood's a treasure trove of architectural wonders, reflecting its colonial and republican past. Wander its cobblestone streets, lined with preserved buildings and iconic balconies. Plus, many historic spots are now cafes and museums, perfect for a Colombian coffee break! La Candelaria blends Spanish colonial, Baroque, and neoclassical styles, offering a picturesque fusion of past and present.

And Don’t Forget the Food!

Dive into a bowl of Colombian food heaven: Sancocho! A soup made with love and a mix of meats, veggies, and tubers like potatoes and yuca (cassava), it's a flavor explosion that'll make your taste buds dance! Slow-cooked to perfection, every spoonful is a journey through Colombian culinary magic. Think fluffy white rice, creamy avocado slices, and a kick of spice with aji (a chili sauce) on the side!
